WASHINGTON (Multibagger) - NASA unveiled breathtaking images taken by the James Webb Space Telescope showcasing two galaxies, one known as the Penguin and the other as the Egg, in the midst of a cosmic merger. These images mark the two-year anniversary of the telescope's groundbreaking scientific discoveries since its launch in 2021.
The Webb telescope has revolutionized our understanding of the early universe and has provided captivating views of the cosmos. The two galaxies featured in the images are located 326 million light-years away in the constellation Hydra, with each galaxy containing billions of stars. Together, they create an image reminiscent of a penguin guarding its egg.
NASA notes that the interaction between the Penguin and Egg galaxies began between 25 and 75 million years ago, with the eventual outcome being a single merged galaxy hundreds of millions of years in the future.
Webb's capabilities extend beyond capturing stunning galactic mergers. The telescope has detected some of the earliest-known galaxies, provided insights into exoplanets beyond our solar system, and shed light on star-forming regions in the universe.
Mark Clampin, astrophysics division director at NASA headquarters, emphasized the significance of Webb's contributions, stating, "This mission has allowed us to look back to the most distant galaxies ever observed and understand the very early universe in a new way."
Webb's advanced design surpasses its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, in sensitivity and range. While Hubble focused on optical and ultraviolet wavelengths, Webb specializes in capturing infrared light, offering a unique perspective on the cosmos.
