U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has assured the public that he is fully committed to ensuring that all ballots for the 2024 presidential election will be delivered in a timely fashion. In response to concerns raised by state and local officials, DeJoy has pledged to address the issues at hand.
A group of election officials recently expressed serious concerns about USPS's ability to handle the delivery of millions of ballots for the upcoming election. They cited issues with processing facility operations, lost or delayed mail, and training deficiencies affecting USPS's ability to deliver election mail accurately and on time.
DeJoy has stated that he will hold a call with state officials to specifically address the concerns raised. He also mentioned that the USPS Office of Inspector General is conducting audits of its plants and delivery units to identify and resolve any issues related to election mail.
Starting October 1, USPS will be deploying ballot monitors and other staff to processing, retail, and delivery units to ensure that policies and procedures are being followed effectively on the ground. Despite the current average delivery time of 2.7 days, USPS recommends that voters mail their completed ballots at least one week before the deadline to ensure timely delivery.
In the 2020 general election, USPS successfully delivered 99.89% of ballots from voters to election officials within seven days. With voting by mail set to begin in some states in the coming weeks, the postal service is taking steps to address any potential issues and improve its efficiency.
