In the inaugural half of the year 2025, the financial markets were subjected to several profound shifts, underpinned by factors identified at the outset of the year. These included the burgeoning uncertainties associated with policy changes instigated by the new U.S. administration, a noticeable uptick in market volatility, and the rigorous examination of inflated U.S. equity valuations. Such developments underscored the paramount importance of broadening the horizons of portfolio diversification beyond the traditional paradigm of 60% stocks and 40% bonds. This strategic adjustment was deemed indispensable for adeptly manoeuvring through the evolving market dynamics.
As we cast our gaze towards the future, it is anticipated that the financial markets will continue to be characterized by intermittent episodes of widespread volatility, alongside disparate performances both within and among different asset classes. The present U.S. administration has shown an inclination towards fostering collaborative relationships with international allies. However, the air of uncertainty that shrouds tariff policies is expected to linger. Although the prospects of deregulation and diminished taxes hold promise, accurately assessing their capacity to counterbalance the repercussions of tariff policies remains a formidable challenge. This is largely owing to the fact that the true economic ramifications of these policies have yet to fully materialize.
The external environment, marred by escalating geopolitical tensions and a mixed bag of economic data, is anticipated to further complicate the decision-making process of the Federal Reserve. This, in turn, diminishes the likelihood of identifying a straightforward trajectory moving forward. In light of these considerations, investors are strongly encouraged to diversify their investment portfolios by integrating alternative strategies. The aim here is to bolster portfolio stability amidst periods rife with uncertainty.
The Persistence of Policy Uncertainty
The initial six months of 2025 proved to be a conducive period for equity market-neutral strategies, and it is envisioned that this favourable climate will persist. Tariff concerns momentarily nudged the U.S. equity market towards the brink of bear territory, only for it to witness a swift recovery to record highs following a temporary halt in tariff enforcement. Nonetheless, the issue of tariff negotiations remains in a state of limbo, with the added complexity of potential legal entanglements contributing to further uncertainty. Whilst deregulation and favourable tax regimes could potentially lend some degree of support, the steep valuations of U.S. equities — necessitating higher earnings multiples amidst a backdrop of decelerating growth and policy shifts — fortify the argument in favour of the continued viability and value addition of market-neutral strategies to investment portfolios.
Regarding strategies aimed at diversification, such as global macro and managed futures, the outlook at the onset of the year was cautiously optimistic for certain segments within both strategies. This encapsulated a preference for agile discretionary macro strategies with expansive geographic coverage within the global macro domain, and a shift away from core sector-focused trend followers within managed futures.
As we advance towards the latter part of the year, our projections for macro and market conditions envisage an extension of the trends observed in the first half. Consequently, our stance regarding discretionary macro managers remains unchanged. For managed futures, trend followers adjusted their positions in the initial five months, subsequently adopting a lighter and more balanced exposure. Given the expectation of fluctuating markets, the continuation of a diversified portfolio comprising various sub-strategies is advised.
